  • By:Vianela Morillo

When we decide to emigrate to a different country, in the vast majority of cases, this decision is made including our dependents. As a result, the Dominican Republic offers the Dependent Visa category, which is issued to dependents of individuals who have been granted regular visas.

The general categories for the purposes of these types of visas are:

  1. Business visas for employment purposes MN1.
  2. Student visas.
  3. Diplomatic Visas.
  4. Official Visas.
  5. Courtesy visas.

We have elaborated on them extensively in this article.

Who is eligible for Dependent Visas?

  1. Spouses.
  2. Underage children.
  3. Exceptions apply when it comes to children of legal age and parents when disability and total dependency is demonstrated.
    4. A domestic employee may also apply if their employer has been granted one of the visa types listed above.

Benefits

Individuals who may benefit from this visa type do not have to demonstrate financial solvency, due to their dependency to the main holder.
There are several benefits, some examples are as follows:

A) Your dependent may be granted an immigration status without meeting the necessary financial requirements.
B) The requirements are minimal.
C) Your Dependent will be legally allowed in the country, thus giving them the opportunity to do the following:

  • Work.
  • Study.
  • Open bank accounts.
  • Conduct business transactions.
  • Move freely, without fear that you will be stopped by immigration officers or deported from the country.
  • Obtaining a driver’s license.

D) Along with many other benefits that are granted to any individual who finds themselves legally in our country or any other country in the world.

Where can this type of visa be requested?

In the Dominican consulate of your country of origin or in the country where you have legal residence.

How long does it take for this Visa to be granted?

The consulate usually responds to these requests within five (5) to fifteen (15) days.

Recommendations

  • Seek advice from a law firm specialized in the area.
  • Never give your passport to anyone.
  • There is no visa type available in the Dominican Republic that can guarantee the success of this option; there is a high chance that an attempt will be made to scam you.
  • If you wish to conduct the process correctly follow all the steps in accordance with the law, based on the applicable requirements, in order to ensure you obtain a positive response to your application.
